\"\"<\/a>Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights is a Dallas-based rock band with a great southern rock sound. The band is made up of front man Jonathan Tyler, guitar player Brandon Pinckard, bassist Nick Jay, vocalist Emotion Brown, and drummer Jordan Cain. They have released one album titled Pardon Me<\/em> that includes the acclaimed song Gypsy Woman<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We caught up with the band after their early Sunday morning rocking performance at the Voodoo Experience Festival in New Orleans last weekend. \u00a0I have seen the band perform many times and they blew me away once again on this early Sunday morning revival. They were really a stand out act of the whole festival and brought an energized performance to the stage even after traveling all night from Florida to do the show. The band was excited to play and be part of the festival for the first time with an epic 2010 lineup of acts like Ozzy Osbourne, MUSE, and My Morning Jacket.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We talked about their upcoming Cincinnati area shows and how they got their start with Atlantic Records. They will be playing at Brick Street in Oxford, Ohio on Thursday, November 11th<\/sup> and Southgate House in Newport on Saturday night November 13th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: I read a lot of the articles about you guys from the Dallas newspapers. Is it true you guys got started by moving Kat Von D\u2019s furniture and got hooked up with your record deal?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jonathan Tyler<\/strong>: It was a long story. There were several people that we went through to get to Atlantic.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The band was signed in 2007 by Atlantic Records partly through a chance encounter. While in Dallas in early 2007, through a series of connections, the band was volunteered to help future television star Kat Von D move to Los Angeles. In exchange for moving furniture for the now famous tattoo artist from LA Ink<\/em>, her manager watched the band perform and got the wheels turning on the career of JTNL. She sent along the band\u2019s demo and the band was met with a strong interest among many labels. The rest, as they say, is history and the band has become a very popular touring act spending most of the year on the road.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Brandon Pinckard<\/strong>: I don\u2019t think we all moved the furniture. I don\u2019t think he moved anything. (Pointing to JT)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nick Jay<\/strong>: (Nick nodding in agreement with Brandon) I think we did everything.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: Jordan wasn\u2019t there.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jordan Cain<\/strong>: I sat on the couch while they moved it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: Something happened there.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: Kat\u2019s sleeping on the couch. She wakes up and says \u201cOh my God there\u2019s a bunch of cute boys in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0It definitely wasn\u2019t all through Kat Von D, but that event sparked something that led us on our path.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: To the record deal right?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: Some cosmic shit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: So you guys have your album Pardon Me<\/em> that\u2019s out right now. What\u2019s the story behind the name of the album?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well it\u2019s the first song. It\u2019s our first album out to public. It\u2019s kind of like a handshake album. We\u2019re kind of like \u201cHey, what\u2019s up? We\u2019re Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of like that kind of statement.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: I thought you were just being polite.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: It is polite.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: We\u2019re very polite.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: It\u2019s just an introduction. It\u2019s just like a \u201cHello, how are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: So are you guys working on any new music right now?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: Not a lot. But we are starting to toss around some ideas.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Pinckard<\/strong>: (Laughing) I’ve got a techno band I\u2019ve been working with. I play the computer. I play the Macintosh.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Is that going to be on the new record?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: I hope we can work some of it in.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Emotion Brown<\/strong>: The concepts are definitely coming to mind.\u00a0 We have been thinking of concepts and small chords. Stuff is starting to develop.\u00a0 We\u2019re kind of just focused on making this one happen.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: When you write, what\u2019s your process? Do you guys do it together or separately?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: It\u2019s different for every song.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>:\u00a0 Usually we start with an idea like a guitar riff or a vocal line or melody or lyric. We start from that small idea and then build into a full song.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>:\u00a0 So what do you guys have up next? You guys tour a lot. You\u2019re on the road what 200 days? 300 days a year?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: Between 200- 250<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: That\u2019s pretty much what we have coming up. Just a lot of touring.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: We just finished a three week tour with a band called JJ Grey and the Mofro and now we started headlining a tour this week for three weeks.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: You guys have played some with a band that I know in Cincinnati, Grooveshire. They seem to fit your style a lot.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: They do. They are great guys.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Amy<\/strong>: Did you guys play with them at Cincinnati before?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Keyboard<\/strong>: Both times<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: It was upstairs at\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Southgate?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yeah<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: How did you guys meet them?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: Just through playing there. We met them at the show.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: What\u2019s you favorite place to play in the U.S. or overseas?\u00a0 Where do you like to play the most?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: We haven\u2019t been overseas yet.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: My favorite places are Austin, Fayetteville, Chicago, and San Francisco.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: Lubbock\u2026 Lubbock, Texas is pretty fun.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Did you guys play\u00a0SxSW?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: Here for the past three years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: A bunch of times.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Do all of you still live in Dallas?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Brown<\/strong>: Yeah, right now.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Small town vibe a little bit. Are you planning on going on the [Kid Rock Cruise] again? That\u2019s the big one.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Tyler<\/strong>: If we are invited we will. If we get invited we\u2019ll go. We might have got ourselves permanently exiled.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: I doubt it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: It could have happened.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Why? What did you do?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Band (in unison):<\/strong> What didn\u2019t we do?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cain<\/strong>: Things that happen in international waters that you don\u2019t need to talk about.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: Things that don\u2019t happen on the mainland\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>:\u00a0 It\u2019s the Vegas of the seas.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: So what is your craziest Kid Rock story? You guys have gone out with him.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: There\u2019s way too many already. We haven\u2019t even played that much with him and we\u2019ve got a lot of them. Most of them don\u2019t even involve him directly. They just involve us.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: The first night on the cruise was pretty cool.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Brown<\/strong>: Oh yeah.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: We had an open bar when we first got on the boat. \u00a0All the bands were hanging out together and drinking drinks, shots, meeting new people in this certain section of the cruise ship. So we were hanging out in there for way too long. And we just decided to play at midnight. We were pretty much beyond\u2026 I was beyond\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: But he came out and played with you didn\u2019t he?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Tyler<\/strong>: Yeah and it was really cool. The only thing I remember about it is the video and pictures of it. But that\u2019s a cool story. We didn\u2019t know if we were going to make it through the set.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: Once we got everybody\u2019s pants on and got on stage everything was cool. We took a minute and then we played. We made it happen.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: So how do you define success?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: Just getting to do what you want to do.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Brown<\/strong>: Being happy<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: Yeah, just as long as I don\u2019t have anyone chasing me around.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Most people I talk to don\u2019t say fame or fortune. It\u2019s a lot of the people who just love to play music.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: Success? Oh shit success?\u00a0 I want to live 90210 baby. \u00a0Mansion in the hills. \u00a0Bitches in the pool.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy: <\/strong>Like Nickelback? (Laughing)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>:<\/strong> Oh yeah exactly like that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: If you weren\u2019t playing music, what would you be doing?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>:\u00a0 Producing music<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Tyler<\/strong>: Maybe drinking somewhere\u00a0 in Peru.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cain<\/strong>: I\u2019d probably be an astronaut.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: I\u2019d be a rambling man. Just traveling around.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Jay<\/strong>: I\u2019d be working in Vegas as Jesus.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tyler<\/strong>: You know we haven\u2019t really done Vegas. We have only gone there for a gig.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Have you played there?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Band<\/strong>: Yeah<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Amy<\/strong>: Is there anything else you guys want to promote or coming up?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Pinckard<\/strong>: Nope<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Brown<\/strong>: We\u2019re just looking forward to the days ahead. Just looking forward to whatever is ahead. We are really excited that people are getting on board with the JTNL sound and that we are gaining new fans everyday.
